Marian Gaborik's second goal of the game 4:56 into overtime lifted the New York Rangers to a thrilling 3-2 win over the host Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
With the Rangers stymied on a lengthy man advantage and the teams headed for a shootout, Gaborik banged home a rebound past Boston netminder Tuukka Rask, who slammed his stick over the crossbar in frustration.
New York found itself on a 4-on-3 advantage after Brad Ference slammed Ryan McDonagh into the boards behind the Rangers net earlier in OT. Ference was given a boarding major and a game misconduct on the play
After a scoreless first period short on scoring chances, Ryan Callahan put the Rangers up shortly after leaving the penalty box at 1:31 of the second frame. The veteran winger streaked down the left side and wired a shot that eluded Rask for his 16th goal of the season.
The Bruins responded less than two minutes later, with Ference converting a David Krejci cross-ice pass from in close for his second goal in as many games.
Gaborik put the Rangers back in front with 5:30 remaining in the period, corraling a loose puck near the right faceoff dot and blasting a shot past Rask. New York netminder Henrik Lundqvist preserved the lead a short time later, making a sliding save to deny the Bruins on a 3-on-1 break.
Lundqvist couldn't keep Boston off the scoresheet in the final minute of the period, as Adam McQuaid fired a shot through a screen with 49 seconds remaining to send the teams into the second intermission tied 2-2.
